GROUP SWIM LESSONS

SEARCH & REGISTER FOR PROGRAMS

PARENT-CHILD CLASSES (ages 6-36 months) 

Classes vary per branch location. Go to Search and Register for Programs to see Spring 1 availability and more information. (See below for 2024 Program session Dates)

Water Discovery (6-18 months)

This program is designed for children ages 6 months-18 months. This is a parent participation class, and a parent must be present in the water with the participant. In this class, the children will be encouraged to discover the water and get comfortable on their stomachs, backs, and learn to submerge with the assistance of an adult.

Water Exploration (18-36 months)

This class is for ages 18 months-36 months and is a parent participation class. The children will learn assisted rolls, blowing bubbles, assisted front and back floats, how to jump into the pool, and how to get out of the pool.

PRE-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (ages 3-5)

Water Acclimation 1

This is a beginner-level class. Children will be introduced to submerging fully under the water. They will learn the Jump-push-turn-and grab pattern as well as the swim- float- swim pattern. They will be taught to exit the water independently.

Water Movement 1

This is an intermediate-level class. The child will learn to float on the back and front, tread water, and front and back glide independently. To register for this class, the child should have no hesitation of submerging completely underwater.

Water Stamina 1

At this level, the child will learn to swim on their back 15 yards, tread water for 1 min, and swim float swim for 25 yards without assistance.

SCHOOL-AGE SWIM LESSONS (Ages 6-12 Years)

Water Acclimation 2

Stroke Introduction

The child must be able to complete a 25-yard swim without assistance to enroll in this class. In this class, they will work on endurance, rotary breathing, sitting dive, resting stroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

Stroke Development

Endurance for this level is raised to 50 yards of continuous swimming. The child will be encouraged to achieve a 25-yard front crawl, 25-yard back crawl, 25 yards Breaststroke, and 15 yards butterfly- with simultaneous arm action and kick.

AQUA CHALLENGE-Mansfield Branch

Aqua Challenge is a 5-week competitive activity-based class for ages 10 to 14 years old. Kids will be challenged in water activities, from timed relays around the lazy river to coordination skills by catching a ball while coming down the water slide. All participants must be good swimmers or have passed the YMCA water stamina 2 class.

COMPETITIVE SWIM TRAINING-Mansfield Branch

This 5-week program focuses on continuing to build speed, endurance, and stroke technique for all four competitive strokes, as well as encouraging swimming as a healthy lifestyle.

Swimmers must be able to swim freestyle and backstroke without stopping for 25 yards.

Classes are available for Beginners and Advanced.

HOMESCHOOL GYM AND SWIM & HOMESCHOOL SWIM

Do you want your homeschooler to be more physically active and meet new friends? At the YMCA of North Central Ohio, our 5-week Homeschool Gym and Swim or Homeschool Swim program provides an opportunity to do just that! The Homeschool Gym and Swim program is a great way to give parents a break during the day and the kids a chance to be active!

Homeschool Swim (Mansfield Branch)-Ages 3-12 (Preschool ages 3-5, School-Age 6-12) 

Homeschool Gym and Swim (Shelby Branch)-Ages 5-15

SPECIALIZED GROUP SWIM-Shelby Branch

This FREE group swim class is designed specifically for individuals with developmental disabilities, special needs, or conditions that require more individualized attention to learn water skills. This class enhances the individual's comfort with water. Aspects of the course include water games, water aerobics, and swim lessons. Parents are required to attend each class with their child; those parents with children who need more supervision are required to get in the water with them.

2024 Program Session Dates

  • Are meals provided?
    Yes. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. We do not allow outside food unless there is a medical reason.
  • Does Child Care ever close? What about weather?
    Our sites close based on the YMCA closure schedule and two professional development days each year. WMFD.com and the ProCare app will alert you of all closures.
  • What does the Step Up To Quality star rating mean?
    Step Up To Quality (SUTQ) is a five-star quality rating and improvement system administered by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. SUTQ recognizes and promotes learning and development programs that meet quality program standards that exceed preschool licensing and school age child care licensing health and safety regulations. Step Up To Quality program standards are based on national research identifying standards which lead to improved outcomes for children.
  • Are the Child Care providers certified?
    Yes, all employees have a thorough background check, CPR, first aid, communicable disease training, child abuse training, and many more continuing education courses.
  • Is there a discount if we have two children in your program?
    YES,
  • Is there a curriculum?
    Yes, our staff gets planning time similar to a school system. Each classroom has lesson plans each day to enhance social, emotional, and educational learning.
